Success Stories
We are proud to share examples of students and educators we've worked with in the past as a way of explaining what we mean when we say that East Indiana AHEC connects students to careers, professionals to communities, and communities to better health.
Sophia Fledderman - Pipeline Program Participant and current Health Sciences / Pre-Med student at East Tennesee State University "I am thankful for AHEC for because I was able to shadow a variety of doctors and watch medical procedures through a program they do in partnership with Margaret Mary Health and Batesville High School. This gave me an edge over some of the other pre-medicine students coming into college and helped give me a better idea about what I want to do in the future. Additionally, AHEC helped me secure a summer internship through the Ripley County Health Department, and it was great experience and chance to learn about the importance of public health, disease prevention, and environmental health and safety."

Jonathan Maple - Pipeline Educator / Assistant Principal at Oldenburg Academy "EI-AHEC helped us identify community-based internship sites for senior students when we launched a new internship program in 2016-2017. That plus their continued monthly meetings with students interested in health careers greatly benefits OA students. In addition, EI-AHEC has assisted with guest speakers and grants to help our science department get necessary supplies to help prepare students for college and health careers. We are truly blessed to have this organization and we appreciate their partnership with our students."

Rachel Merkel - Pipeline AND Health Professions Student Program Participant and current BSN student at IUPUC "I've worked with EI-AHEC programs for the past 4 years. First, as a high school student I participated in health careers mentorship program that included 'AHEC Days' for students, and I've also worked with them as part of two of my college classes as well as a health professions student college club. I honestly can say that these programs have helped me to better understand myself as an individual and as a team member in the world of healthcare. I have become confident as a student and as a leader".

Lori Grubbs, RN - Assistant Professor of Nursing, Ivy Tech Lawrenceburg I am the new simulation coordinator for my Ivy Tech campus. I feel better prepared for this role because of my relationship with EI-AHEC and the opportunities they have provided. Through my involvement with AHEC and the Southeastern Indiana Simulation Consortium I was able to attend the SUN simulation conference where I learned many techniques, equipment upgrades/repairs, and was able to network with peers. I am also a former student of other nursing educators who have been involved with East Indiana AHEC!

Amanda Sheeley - Therapist, Community Mental Health Center, Lawrenceburg "The agency I work for has partnered with EI-AHEC for several years. Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in trauma-informed care training funded by EI-AHEC. This has increased my effectiveness in treating behavioral health conditions -the most impactful aspect of the training comes when I am able to share what I learned with patients and and see the look in their eyes when they begin to understand themselves and their responses better."

Tammie Phillips, RN - Staff Development Coordinator, Decatur County Memorial Hospital "Decatur County Memorial Hospital works with EI-AHEC in many ways. We have worked with AHEC as part of the Simulation Consortium for several years, and this partnership was instrumental in the development of our healthcare simulation program and continues to support our efforts. EI-AHEC also provides career information to area high school students who shadow our healthcare professionals as part of career exploration at DCMH. AHEC staff meet with the students regularly and helps guide them into their fields of interest. EI-AHEC also places medical students in our physician practices.
