Medical Student Clerkships - IUSM Family Medicine
East Indiana AHEC and the Department of Family Medicine, IU School of Medicine work together to place medical students at family medicine clinics throughout the EI-AHEC region to complete their outpatient family medicine rotations.
In a typical academic year, between 10 and 15 IUSM students will complete their family medicine clerkships at preceptor sites in the East Indiana AHEC region. Board-certified family medicine physicians serve as IU community faculty for these students, and East Indiana AHEC coordinates rotation logistics including housing, interprofessional networking, and community-based learning opportunities that are unique to each host community.
Medical students who complete these rotations comment that they enjoy the broad mix of patients and conditions seen in a typical family medicine rotation day and that they get lots of hands-on learning opportunities as the only student being supervised by their preceptor.
If you are an IUSM student who has been assigned to an East Indiana AHEC family medicine preceptor site, be on the lookout for an email from jeff.hartz@eiahec.org with rotation details approximately 6 weeks before your rotation start date. You are always welcome to reach out early with questions!
If you are a board-certified family medicine physician in the East Indiana AHEC area who is interested in precepting medical students, please contact jeff.hartz@eiahec.org for more information. The IU School of Medicine offers Continuing Medical Education credit to family medicine preceptors!
IUSM Medical Students should always reference the Family Medicine Clerkship page on IU Canvas as the most current and authoritative resource for clerkship dates, details, and assignments!
